The giant panda is among the shyest and rarest wild animals in the world. It is a peaceful animal, which often rolls playfully about. It spends two thirds of the day eating, even though it doesn't normally have to look for food for long, because the bamboo in the wild covers large areas of its habitat. The last third of the day, it spends resting. It doesn't have a special resting place. When it wants to rest, it just lies down wherever it happens to be. It leans against a tree or lies down in the snow and sleeps for a while, normally for 2-4 hours a time, but sometimes just for a few minutes. The panda is entirely dependent on bamboo, and needs enormous amounts, so it has to have a large territory. It lives alone in its territory of 4-10 square km. It is a very good climber, and its refuge in danger is sometimes in trees. Its predators are brown bears, leopards and wild dogs which hunt in packs. During winter and summer the panda's routine is more or less the same.
